How implementing an automated system redefined logistical efficiency for a major manufacturer.
“The analysis and solution proposed by Junk Cats not only optimized our waste management costs by over 40%, but also created a clear and measurable path towards a circular economy.”

Automated sorting system for polymers
and material recovery logistics
Contract completed in October 2023
Polymax Industries was facing a complex post-industrial plastic waste stream, where manual sorting was inefficient and costly. The Junk Cats team conducted a comprehensive material flow analysis and designed a modular automated sorting system with NIR sensors.
A detailed review of the industrial waste transformation process, written by a production manager.
I collaborated with Junk Cats to manage the secondary stream of polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) from our factory. Initially, this material was considered a logistical and cost problem.
The team implemented an automated sorting system that not only separates polymer types but also identifies contaminants based on spectral composition. This precision increased the purity of the recovered material from an estimated 70% to over 94%.
"The circular economy is not just a concept, but a precise logistical network. Reducing dependence on virgin raw material was directly proportional to the efficiency of the recovery system."
The most impressive aspect was the reverse logistics model. Junk Cats optimized collection routes based on our production volume and the processing unit's location, reducing the transport carbon footprint by almost 30%. Traceability and purity data are accessible in real-time through a dedicated platform.
As a direct effect, we were able to reintegrate part of the recycled material into our own production cycle, closing the internal loop. The partnership transformed a cost center into a line of efficiency and compliance with environmental standards.
